Cologne is a city in Germany located in the west of the country. In 2015, it had a population of 1.07 million. Cologne is located about 40 kilometers from the Belgian border in the west of the country. The city is crossed by the Rhine. Cologne is the fourth largest city in Germany. It is also the largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia. Cologne is the seat of several European institutions. Examples include the EU's Court of First Instance and the European Court of Auditors. In 2016, Cologne hosted the sixth edition of the European Games. The city was founded in the 1st century BC by the Romans. Cologne was originally a small village on the left bank of the Rhine. It was in 50 BC that the Roman colony, Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, was founded. It was not until the Middle Ages that the city experienced an economic and demographic boom. In 870, Cologne was established as an archbishopric and quickly developed into a religious center. The development of the city was more important from the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance. The city prospered economically through maritime trade. Cologne became an important city at the end of the 18th century.
